Waterholes deliver a disproportionate share of safari sightings, and camps and hides are sited around them deliberately. The concentration follows from water being the one resource that cannot be substituted.
Why water becomes the limiting resource
Grazing and browsing can be found across a wide area even in poor conditions, but surface water in a dry season exists only at scattered points.
Large herbivores must drink regularly, and elephants require substantial volumes daily, so their movements are organised around water availability.
As seasonal pans dry, the number of options falls, and animals travel progressively further to reach the ones that remain.
Arrival is scheduled by risk
Drinking is dangerous. An animal at a waterhole has its head down, its footing is poor, and predators know exactly where prey will appear.
Species therefore stagger their visits, with some drinking in the open heat of midday when predator activity is lowest, accepting thermal cost for safety.
Others arrive in large groups so that some individuals can watch while others drink, which is why herds often stand in formation before approaching.
A hierarchy at the edge
Where space is tight, dominant species and individuals drink first and the rest wait, producing visible queuing among elephants, buffalo and antelope.
Elephants may exclude others entirely while present, and they also dig into dry riverbeds to reach subsurface water, which other species then use.
These interactions are why a waterhole delivers behaviour rather than only sightings, and why patient watching from a hide often outperforms driving.
What artificial waterholes change
Many reserves maintain pumped waterholes, which hold animals in the reserve through dry seasons and support reliable tourism.
The ecological effect is significant. Permanent water removes the seasonal movement that once distributed grazing pressure, and vegetation around the point degrades.
Species adapted to arid conditions can also be displaced by water-dependent competitors that could not previously persist there, which some reserves have addressed by closing boreholes.
How this shapes a game drive
Guides plan routes around known water in the dry season and abandon that strategy entirely once rain scatters temporary pans across the reserve.
Sightings become far harder after rain, which is why the dry months are considered the stronger viewing season despite the harsher conditions.
The wet season compensates differently, with calving concentrated in that period, abundant birdlife and vegetation that photographs far better than dust.
