The core idea

Restoring natural processes rather than managing for a defined target state.

The proposition is that restoring the processes — grazing, predation, natural disturbance, hydrology — allows the system to develop without continuous intervention.

Trophic rewilding

Reintroducing species, particularly large herbivores and predators, on the basis that their ecological roles are missing.

Which is the version that generates most attention and most opposition.

The evidence for large predators affecting ecosystems is real and more complex than the popular accounts suggest.

The frequently cited case of wolves transforming a landscape through effects cascading down the food chain has been substantially qualified by subsequent research, with other factors including climate and other herbivores contributing.

Which does not mean the effect is absent, and it means the simple version is an oversimplification of a contested literature.

Passive rewilding

Removing management and allowing succession to proceed.

Which is the cheapest approach and is happening at scale in regions where agriculture is being abandoned.

The outcome depends heavily on what is present to colonise and on what the starting condition was, and it is not predictable.

The baseline problem

Restoring to what is a genuine question without an obvious answer.

Ecosystems have changed continuously, and any chosen reference period is arbitrary.

The realistic version

Restoring processes where possible, accepting uncertainty about outcomes, engaging seriously with the people affected, and recognising that it is one approach among several rather than a replacement for conservation as practised.

Urban and small scale

The principles apply at scales far below landscape.

Reducing mowing, allowing natural regeneration in corners, restoring ponds and removing hard surfacing all increase habitat and process.

Which is where most people can act, and the aggregate area of gardens and urban green space is substantial.

Marine rewilding

Less discussed and arguably more tractable.

Removing fishing pressure allows recovery that has been documented to be rapid in fully protected areas.
