National park means different things in different countries, from strictly protected wilderness to inhabited working landscapes, and the differences matter.

The two models

The wilderness model designates largely uninhabited land, owned by the state, managed primarily for conservation and public access.

The lived-in landscape model designates areas including farms, villages and businesses, with planning controls rather than state ownership.

The founding tension

What visitors can do

Visit outside peak periods and consider less-visited areas, which reduces pressure and generally improves the experience.

Stay on trails, since off-trail traffic causes disproportionate damage.

Follow wildlife distance guidance, which exists for the animals' benefit and for yours.

And engage with the funding question, since parks depend on political support that is easier to sustain when the public values them.

Other protected designations

National park is one category among several, and the others frequently protect more effectively.

Strict nature reserves permit minimal human presence.

Habitat management areas allow active intervention for specific species.

Protected landscapes accommodate human use with conservation objectives.

Which means the designation indicates the management objective rather than the strength of protection.

Marine protected areas

Have expanded enormously in coverage, with the strength of protection varying from full no-take to essentially unrestricted.

Which means coverage statistics substantially overstate the protection provided, and analyses distinguishing by protection level find a much smaller effectively protected proportion.

Fully protected areas show consistent recovery of fish biomass, which is among the clearer conservation findings.

Buffer zones

Areas surrounding a core protected area with intermediate restrictions.

Which reduces edge effects and provides a transition, and it involves the surrounding communities in a way strict boundaries do not.

Fire management

An area where park management has changed substantially.

Decades of fire suppression in systems adapted to regular fire produced fuel accumulation and eventually more severe fires.

Which is now widely recognised, and prescribed burning and managed natural fire have been reintroduced in many systems.

Indigenous fire management practices have been recognised as sophisticated and are being reincorporated in several countries.

Wildlife management within parks

Populations without predators can exceed what the habitat supports.

Which produces vegetation damage and eventual population crashes.

Culling, contraception and predator reintroduction are the options, and each is contested for different reasons.

Access and equity

Visitor demographics at most park systems do not reflect the wider population.

Which has prompted programmes addressing cost, transport, information and representation, with mixed results.

Distance and transport are consistently identified as the largest practical barriers.

Which means transport provision and outreach do more than fee reductions alone, and the programmes with results have generally addressed both.

Volunteering

Most park systems run volunteer programmes covering trail maintenance, monitoring and visitor information.
