The framework

The most widely used system assesses species against quantitative criteria and places them in categories representing extinction risk.

National and international listings

Separate systems operate at different levels.

International assessment describes global status. National listings describe status within a country and may differ substantially.

Legal protection generally derives from national or regional legislation rather than from the international assessment, which carries no legal force itself.

Trade regulation

A separate international framework regulates trade in listed species through a permit system.

Species moving to lower threat categories following recovery.

The extinct category

Requires exhaustive surveys throughout the known range at appropriate times before a species is declared extinct.

Rediscoveries occur, which justifies the caution, and premature declaration has consequences for whether searching continues.

How the assessments are made

By specialist groups of researchers working on the taxon, applying the published criteria to available evidence.

Which means they depend on someone having done the research, and taxa with few specialists are assessed less well.

Prioritisation

Status is one input into deciding where to direct resources, and it is not the only one.

Frameworks also weight evolutionary distinctiveness, ecological function, feasibility of action and cost.
